LSO Meeting Minutes

Meeting Minutes from November 21st, 2014

The meeting began at 2:30 pm in 1151 Van Hise Hall

Eric Raimy joined us to discuss the potential reorganization of Language and Linguistics in Van Hise. Graduate students should expect to receive an email sometime in the near future asking them to participate in a “straw vote” as to whether the Language and Linguistics programs should organize into a single department. Linguistics would still be an independent program within that school. This reorganization will most likely result in some staff changes and reorganization of programs and funding, though details are yet to be worked out. Some members expressed concerns, but overall consensus was that this was likely to be a positive move that would give Linguistics more negotiating power for future funding. It would be at least two years before we see the plan put into action.

There was also some discussion of the restructuring of the undergraduate major into separate tracks (Computational, Psycholinguistics, and Documentation), which is an independent process.

Sarah Lundquist announced that we have received an ASM grant of $2000 for the following five students to go to the LSA in Seattle next year.

  • Meredith Johnson
  • Bryan Rosen
  • Mateja Schuck
  • Brittany Williams
  • Sarah Lundquist

Brittany Williams opened the discussion of new T-shirts for the LSO. She presented her own ideas for the shirt design (with “UW Linguistics” on the side of the shirt) as well as several other suggestions, such as using American Apparel shirts as a base and finding a screen printer either on Etsy or somewhere locally. It was eventually suggested that we would have a design contest so that several members could submit designs. Andrea Cudworth will organize this contest. All designs should be sent to her at acudworth@wisc.edu

Sarah Lundquist brought up next year’s WiGL (Workshop in General Linguistics) It was decided that we would publish a Call for Papers immediately and plan for a submission deadline at the end of January and for the conference to be on April 11-12.

Sarah also mentioned having another LSO Talent Show, potentially in May. Social Chairs Xin Li and Andrea Cudworth will begin planning for it.
