Course description: This course is an introduction to the scientific study of human language. It will give you a broad understanding of the nature of language, addressing issues on both its structure and its use. It will acquaint you with language universals by examining the fundamental similarities between languages and possible variations among languages. You will acquire some of the basic tools for linguistic analysis, and apply them to data from various languages. This empirical approach will lead you to challenge some of the widely held beliefs about language, to sharpen and refine your linguistic abilities, and to reach a deeper understanding of this communication system unique to humans.

Text book: Fromkin, V. And R. Rodman, An Introduction to Language.

Requirements: There will be a midterm exam and a final exam. The exams will be based on the content of the lectures, discussion sections, and the reading assignments.

There will be approximately five homework assignments. Assignments must be handed in on time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Any student who is absent for any reason is still responsible for turning in the assignments on time.

Grades: Midterm exam: 30%, final exam: 30%, assignment average: 40%.
