Linguistics Department: 1168 Van Hise 262-2292
Course description:
This course is an introduction to the scientific study of human
language. It will give you a broad understanding of the nature of language,
addressing issues on both its structure and its use. It will acquaint you
with language universals by examining the fundamental similarities between
languages and possible variations among languages. You will acquire some
of the basic tools for linguistic analysis, and apply them to data from
various languages. This empirical approach will lead you to challenge some
of the widely held beliefs about language, to sharpen and refine your linguistic
abilities, and to reach a deeper understanding of this communication system
unique to humans.
